         Kawa Training Center

On 31 May 2010 Kawa Training Center was registered as an NGO in Zanzibar. This organization aims to train qualified people for the tourism industry who need to pass a comprehensive series of examinations in English, Tourguide skills with tour-related topics of: Zanzibar culture, history, flora, fauna, architecture, and fluency in English and Kiswahili. Furthermore Kawa Training Center aims to advocate and promote the improvement of peoples qualifications for the tourism industry and to promote sustainable practices within the tourism industry.

Kawa Training Center works with some Zanzibarian teachers and some foreign volunteers to maintain international standards of education for the tourism industry. The education supplements the current educational institutes as it delivers different training contents, using a different approach compared to other training institutes on the Island. The training approach focuses initially on basic skills, such as presentation skills, general tourism knowledge and language skills. After that the students will start with the tourism-centered part of the training.

From April until July 2011, the first group of 9 trainees started in the classroom training. After 3 months of intensive training, six of these trainees are now getting their work experience within Kawa Tours. Together with an experienced tour guide, the trainees are organising the tours. The trainees are also active in promoting Kawa Tours amongst tour operators, hotels and tourist information offices.

Kawa Training Center works with volunteers to minimize the costs for training for the trainees. We are always looking for volunteers who are based in Zanzibar and are interested in doing trainings in a variety of subjects.
